Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure performed to reshape and enhance the appearance of the nose. It is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries sought by individuals who are unhappy with the size, shape, or proportion of their nose or have functional issues related to breathing.

There are two primary types of rhinoplasty:

  1. Cosmetic Rhinoplasty: This type of rhinoplasty is performed to improve the aesthetic appearance of the nose. It can address various concerns, including:

    • Reducing or increasing the overall size of the nose.
    • Changing the shape of the nasal bridge, tip, or nostrils.
    • Correcting asymmetry or crookedness of the nose.
    • Reshaping a bulbous or drooping nasal tip.
    • Narrowing the width of the nose.
  2. Functional Rhinoplasty: Functional rhinoplasty focuses on improving nasal function and addressing breathing problems. It is often performed to correct structural issues that may be obstructing the airway, such as a deviated septum or nasal valve collapse. Functional rhinoplasty can be done simultaneously with cosmetic rhinoplasty if both aesthetic and functional concerns are present.

The rhinoplasty procedure generally involves the following steps:

  1. Anesthesia: The patient is given either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation to ensure comfort during the surgery.

  2. Incisions: The surgeon makes incisions inside the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty) or across the columella (the tissue between the nostrils) in addition to internal incisions (open rhinoplasty).

  3. Reshaping of the Nose: The surgeon carefully lifts the skin and reshapes the underlying bone and cartilage to achieve the desired changes in the nose’s appearance.

  4. Nasal Tissues Adjustment: The nasal cartilage and tissues may be added or removed to achieve the desired shape and structure.

  5. Incision Closure: The incisions are closed with sutures, and nasal splints or internal tubes may be placed to support the newly shaped nose during the healing process.

Recovery from rhinoplasty typically involves some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which gradually subside over time. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities and keep their head elevated during the initial recovery period. The final results of rhinoplasty become more apparent as the swelling resolves, but complete healing and refinement of the nose’s appearance can take several months.

Rhinoplasty is a complex surgical procedure that requires the expertise of a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon. It’s essential for individuals considering rhinoplasty to have a detailed consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss their goals, expectations, and any functional concerns they may have. A thorough evaluation will help the surgeon create a customized surgical plan to achieve the desired results while maintaining harmony with the rest of the facial features.
